Founded on October 6, 1821, initially named Hindoo College, this venerable institution holds the distinction of being one of India’s oldest centers of modern education. Its inception came under the stewardship of Mountstuart Elphinstone, serving as the Lieutenant Governor of the Bombay Presidency. The college’s establishment was made possible through the redirection of funds from the former Peshwa’s Dakshina Fund, subsequently administered by Sardar Khanderao Dabhade following the annexation of the Peshwa’s territories in 1818. Additionally recognized as the Poona Sanskrit College, its inaugural principal was Major Thomas Candy.
