Himachal Pradesh University was established through an Act of the Legislative Assembly of Himachal Pradesh on July 22, 1970, in response to the needs and aspirations of the Union Territory. The territory was on the brink of gaining full statehood within the Union of India by January 25, 1971. As the sole multi-faculty residential and affiliating university in the state, it caters to higher education in urban, rural, and tribal regions through both formal and distance learning modes.
