The origins of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), colloquially referred to as the Pusa Institute, trace back to 1905 when it was established in Pusa, Bihar. This inception was made possible by a generous donation of 30,000 pounds from American philanthropist Mr. Henry Phipps. Initially named the Agricultural Research Institute (ARI), it comprised five departments: Agriculture, Cattle Breeding, Chemistry, Economic Botany, and Mycology. In 1907, a Bacteriology unit was introduced. Subsequently, in 1911, the institute’s name was changed to the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research, and in 1919, it became the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute. After a severe earthquake on January 15, 1934, the institute relocated to Delhi on July 29, 1936.
