In 1982, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang, was founded and initially administered directly by the Government of Odisha under the title Odisha College of Engineering (OCE). Before this, starting from 1981, the institute operated under the name Modern Polytechnic (MPT), providing Diploma Courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining, and Survey Engineering. In 1987, the OCE and MPT were amalgamated and rebranded as IGIT, Sarang, with management transferred to an Autonomous Society.
