The National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, previously referred to as the Regional Institute of Technology, commenced its journey on August 15, 1960. It originated as a collaborative effort between the Government of India and the Government of Bihar, as part of the REC’s (Regional Engineering College) initiative, aimed at establishing institutions to foster top-notch technical education across India. Envisioned to produce graduates of exceptional caliber capable of offering technological leadership to the region, it was one of the pioneering eight Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) established during the Second Five-Year Plan (1956 – 1961).
