The concept of establishing a university in Lucknow was initially suggested by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, K.C.I.E. of Mahmudabad. He articulated this idea in an article published in “The Pioneer,” advocating for the foundation of a university in Lucknow. Shortly thereafter, Sir Harcourt Butler, K.C.S.I., K.C.I.E, assumed the position of Lieutenant-Governor of the United Provinces. His notable interest in educational matters within his jurisdiction, including higher education, injected renewed enthusiasm into the proposition. The process to establish the university commenced with a General Committee of educationists and individuals keen on university education convening at Government House, Lucknow, on November 10, 1919. During this gathering, chaired by Sir Harcourt Butler, the blueprint for the new university was delineated.
