The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established by an Act of Parliament in 1956, declaring it an autonomous institution of national importance with defined objectives and functions. Under this Act, AIIMS is empowered to confer its own medical degrees, diplomas, and academic distinctions. The degrees and diplomas granted by AIIMS are recognized medical qualifications under the Indian Medical Council Act. They are deemed equivalent to those awarded by other Indian universities, entitling the holders to the same privileges.
