Andhra University holds the distinction of not only being one of the oldest educational institutions in the country but also the first conceived as a residential and teaching-cum-affiliating University, primarily focusing on post-graduate teaching and research.
The institution holds a special place in the hearts of the State’s people, emerging after a protracted and collective struggle by the Telugu elite for a University in the educationally underserved northern Circars and Ceded districts of the erstwhile Madras Presidency.
Formed in 1926 by the Madras Act of 1926, Andhra University is now 97 years old and owes its visionary founding Vice-Chancellor, Sir C.R. Reddy, for its fruitful journey.
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former President of India, succeeded Dr. C.R. Reddy in 1931 as one of its Vice-Chancellors. On July 1, 1931, the University College of Arts was inaugurated, offering initial courses in Telugu language and literature, History, Economics, and Politics. Subsequently, the College of Science and Technology was established a year later, introducing Honours courses in Physics and Chemistry. The university took a pioneering role in introducing numerous novel courses in Science, Arts, Management, and Engineering across the country.
