Annamalai University, boasting a vast campus spanning nearly 1000 acres, stands as one of the most extensive residential universities in Southern Asia. It comprises 10 faculties and 49 departments of study, all nestled in Chidambaram, known as the Abode of the Cosmic Dancer Lord Nataraja.
In the early 1920s, with a vision to uplift the underprivileged and promote Tamil Literature, Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar established Sri Minakshi College, Sri Minakshi Tamil College, and Sri Minakshi Sanskrit College in a rural setting at Chidambaram. Eventually, in 1928, Rajah Sir S. R. M. Annamalai Chettiar collaborated with the local Government to convert these institutions into a university. Consequently, on January 1, 1929, Annamalai University came into existence, in accordance with the Annamalai University Act 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act 1 of 1929). Since its inception, the university has played a remarkable role in the lives of people within and beyond its vicinity.
