As a trailblazer and premier center of higher education operating under the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, KSOU emerged as an independent entity from the distinguished University of Mysore in 1996. Before attaining university status, KSOU functioned as the Institute of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education (ICC&CE) under the University of Mysore, established in 1969.
