The institution is the realization of the aspirations of its founders, the late Dr. D. G. S. Dhinakaran and the current Chancellor, Dr. Paul Dhinakaran. Originating in 1986 as an Engineering College, it earned autonomous status in 1999. Acknowledging its exceptional academic prowess, the institution was granted Deemed-to-be University status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in recognition of its excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development. This elevation to Deemed University status was declared under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, through notification no 9-3-2000-U3, dated June 23, 2004, by the Government of India.
