Originally known as the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, was established in 1960 through an Act of Parliament. Alongside seven other institutions, its primary goal was to set high standards for engineering education nationwide and promote national integration. As a fully-funded premier technological institution under the Government of India, it operates under the governance of an autonomous Board of Governors. The institute functions as a university, granting degrees such as B.Tech., M.C.A., M.Sc., M.B.A., M.Tech., and Ph.D. upon successful completion of the respective programs.
Transcripts from NIT Durgapur contain the marks of each subject from the first to last semester. This is then placed in an envelope which is sealed and stamped/signed across the back-flap.
