On December 2, 1985, it was founded under the name “Telugu University” by an Act of Legislation (Act No. 27 of 1985) passed by the State Legislature of the former united Andhra Pradesh. The university’s main headquarters were located in Hyderabad, with additional satellite campuses at Srisailam and Rajamahendravaram. In 1994, the School of Folk and Tribal Lore was established in Warangal.
