Established on June 12, 1956, under the Jabalpur University Act, 1956 (Act No. 22 of 1956), the university initially held jurisdiction over the Jabalpur revenue district. It relocated to its current site at Saraswati Vihar, Pachpedi, Jabalpur, in 1961.
On June 7, 1983, the university underwent a renaming, becoming Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, as per Act No. 23 of 1983, in tribute to the renowned and courageous Gond Queen of Garha Mandla.
