Saurashtra University was established in response to a strong demand for a separate university from prominent educationists and freedom fighters in the Saurashtra region, seeking autonomy from Gujarat University (Ahmedabad). This demand gained traction after the creation of Gujarat state on May 1, 1961. The Saurashtra University Act (Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965) was passed by the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat to formalize its establishment. On May 23, 1967, Saurashtra University was officially founded, initially operating from two headquarters – Rajkot and Bhavnagar. However, after the inclusion of Bhavnagar University, Rajkot became the sole headquarters. The expansive campus, spanning 363 acres, serves the educational needs of Amreli, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Morbi districts.
