Bhagalpur district, centrally located in Bhagalpur division, has its headquarters in the city of Bhagalpur, serving both the division and the district, including the Sadar subdivision. The district is divided into three sub-divisions: Naugachia, Bhagalpur Sadar, and Kahalgaon, with a total of 16 C.D. Blocks. Historically, Bhagalpur district constituted the southeastern region of the Subah of Bihar during the Mughal era. Following the grant of Diwani to the East India Company in 1765, the district covered a substantial area east of Sarkar Munger, primarily south of the Ganges, excluding Pargana Chhai. This also included Munger until its separation in 1832. Santhal Pargana became a distinct district in 1855-56.
