Utkal University, established on November 27, 1943, holds the esteemed position of being the foundational university in the state of Odisha. The visionaries behind its creation were Pandit Nilakantha Dash, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, Pandit Godavarish Mishra, and other eminent figures in modern Orissa. The initial functioning of Utkal University commenced on November 27, 1943, at Ravenshaw College (now University) in Cuttack. The crucial step toward its expansion happened when Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the inaugural President of India, laid the foundation for the existing 400-acre campus on January 1, 1958. A significant milestone occurred when Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India and a distinguished educationist, inaugurated the present campus at Vani Vihar on January 2, 1963. In its initial phase, the university primarily served as an affiliating and examining body.
