Established by the renowned Rabindranath Thākur, commonly known as Tagore, in 1921, Visva-Bharati was accorded the status of a central university and declared an institution of national significance through an Act of Parliament in 1951. The University’s governance structure involves the President of India serving as the Paridarsaka (Visitor), the Governor of West Bengal as the Pradhana (Rector), and the Prime Minister of India fulfilling the role of the Acharya (Chancellor). Additionally, the Upacharya (Vice-chancellor) of the University is appointed by the President of India.
