Aligarh Muslim University is a public central university in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India, which was originally established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875.
The genesis of the university can be traced back to the visionary efforts of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a prominent Muslim reformer and statesman.
The British decision to discontinue the use of Persian in 1842 for government employment and as the language of Courts of Law deeply concerned the Muslim community in the subcontinent. Sir Syed perceived the necessity for Muslims to attain proficiency in the English language and Western sciences. He believed that this educational evolution was vital for the community to maintain its social and political influence, especially in Northern India.
