The State Legislature passed the resolution to establish the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology during the 33rd year of the Republic of India on March 31, 1982. This resolution came into effect on August 1, 1982, with the university’s jurisdiction covering the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir and its headquarters situated at Shalimar, Srinagar. Following the establishment of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), educational, research, and extension training units in the agricultural sector were transferred to SKUAST from various development departments of Jammu and Kashmir State, including agriculture, animal husbandry, sheep husbandry, and sericulture. The university adopts the Land Grant College concept of the USA, aligning with the Model Act of State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) formulated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
